My Brilliant Divorce
Elmwood Players and director Susan Cameron are excited to announce the casting of Claire Bruce in the role of Angela. Claire was recently seen on stage at Elmwood in our last year's production of Twelve Angry Jurors, and prior to that, 2022's Ladies Day. We also thank all those who auditioned for this role. Middle-aged Angela is left and divorced by her husband of many years (nicknamed Roundhead) after he discloses that he has a Mexican lover "Mona the Poser". Angela's adult daughter tells her that she was the only person who didn't know about the affair, which has been going on long-term. Alone, with only family dog Axal for company, Angela mourns her marriage and learns how to live without her family.

Calling all Prospective Plays and Directors
Planning for 2025 is getting underway (yep, already!) and we need your input. If you would like to be considered to direct for us next year please let us know via hello@elmwoodplayers.org.nz. You don’t need to be on committee to direct a play!

The Fine Print
We have four adult seasons per year: April, July, and Sep/Oct school holidays, and a packaway set slot in August. The packaway slot means we can’t have an elaborate set as it needs to be set up and packed away every night; this slot is usually used for plays other than the standard two-act, eg a group of short one-acts, or a single longer one act play, but we are open to any ideas that don’t have a big set. |
If you have a play you’d like to direct please email us with the following (we use this to help track down scripts or information about the play to help with the evaluation process):

Please get your ideas to us by July 14th, so we have time to collate all the information by the end of that month

FAQs
I’d like to direct but I don’t have a specific play in mind, can I still volunteer?
Yes. If we have a good play that didn't come with a director we could match you up. Please let us know if you’d prefer a comedy, drama or something in between, and the season(s) for which you’d be available.
I’d like to direct but I have little to no experience, can I still volunteer?
Yes you can. We could match you up with a mentor who would help develop the play with you, or maybe you'd like to act as an assistant director to learn the ropes - let us know.
I don’t want to direct, but I have a great idea for a play, do you want to hear it?
Yep – if there’s a play you think would suit us please let us know.
Why are you calling for plays so early?
We want to give everyone time to think about plays, obtain their own script copies and do any preparation they think is necessary to be ready for a play reading.
What happens next?
At the end of July the committee will evaluate all suggestions and produce a shortlist, which normally consists of about 10 plays. We then have a play-reading session for the shortlisted plays, which is done by the committee and invited guests, eg the prospective directors. We don’t do the whole play at the play-reading, normally it’s about 20 minutes of it, plus discussion. The result of this session is a proposed 2025 season and one or two backups in case we can't get the rights for our first choices. The season is announced after we have secured performance rights. It can take several weeks to obtain rights, but we hope to announce the 2025 season by October.
As always, there are no guarantees for any play or director being accepted in any given year, but we will consider and discuss every play that’s suggested to us.
